Oracle Red Bull Racing F1 Team
TEAM PROFILE
Based in Milton Keynes, the title-winning Red Bull Racing outfit started out as Stewart Grand Prix, named after owner and 3-time World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart in 1997. The team spent three years in F1, experiencing the most success with the duo of Rubens Barrichello and Johnny Herbert. Stewart’s final season in 1999 yielded their one and only win, Herbert winning at the Nürburgring with Barrichello in 3rd place in the same race. Fathers of current F1 drivers Magnussen (Jan/Kevin) and Verstappen (Jos/Max) also raced for the team. Ford purchased the team from Stewart at the end of 1999, the team renamed to Jaguar Racing, fielding 1999 Championship runner-up Eddie Irvine with Herbert for their first season in 2000. Mediocre performances followed on track, with Irvine scoring the team’s first podium as Jaguar at the 2001 Monaco Grand Prix with a fine 3rd place, backing up this result with another podium in the Italian Grand Prix of 2002. Aussie Mark Webber moved up the grid from Minardi with the team for 2003, with the team becoming a respectable midfield runner at the hands of Webber, consistently scoring points including top-3 grid positions at Brazil and Hungary. Red Bull purchased the Jaguar team at the end of 2004, with the team becoming the fully-fledged Red Bull team from 2005 onwards. McLaren veteran David Coulthard drove for the team for four seasons before his retirement at the end of 2008, scoring two podiums for the team – a pair of 3rd places at the 2006 Monaco and the 2008 Canadian Grands Prix. The second Red Bull seat for 2005/06 were shared by Red Bull juniors, however it was Coulthard that scored the majority of the team’s points in this time. Webber rejoined the team for 2007, with Sebastian Vettel promoted from sister team Toro Rosso for 2009 and beyond. The 2009 season began Red Bull’s rise to the pinnacle of F1, the team winning six races on its way to 2nd place in the Constructor’s Championship behind Brawn GP. Red Bull’s dominance proper began in 2010, with the team winning four consecutive Constructor’s titles – Vettel winning all four Driver’s Championships between 2010-13 and Webber coming close to the title in 2010. Following Webber’s retirement in 2013, fellow Aussie Daniel Ricciardo was promoted from Toro Rosso, meaning the 2014 season was the team’s first full season fielding two Red Bull-backed drivers. Red Bull’s performances waned as the turbo hybrid era saw Mercedes take over the mantle of F1’s dominant team. Red Bull were still a race winning team in 2014 however, Ricciardo taking three wins in an impressive first season at the team. Vettel departed for Ferrari for 2015, with Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat struggling with a difficult car and failing to win a race for the first time in seven seasons. Seeking to dominate once again, Red Bull promoted Max Verstappen midway through 2016 at the expense of Kvyat, Verstappen winning his first race with the team at the Spanish Grand Prix. Despite not winning any championships, the Verstappen-Ricciardo duo was a fruitful one for the team – the pair taking nine victories between them in the 2016-18 period. Following Ricciardo’s move to Renault, Pierre Gasly became another Toro Rosso graduate in 2019 before being replaced by Alex Albon mid-season, who lasted until the end of 2020. Verstappen continued his winning ways, taking five wins in 2019/20 to combined two podiums for Gasly and Albon. For the first time since 2008, Red Bull opted to move away from promoting from within, instead taking Racing Point’s Sergio Perez for 2021. A combination of a better car, a stronger Honda power unit and Perez’s experience, Red Bull pushed Mercedes all the way in the Constructor’s Championship and Verstappen winning the Driver’s Championship on the final lap of the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Red Bull returned to dominating F1 in 2022, Verstappen winning a record 15 races and Perez two on the way to a fifth Constructor’s title. Verstappen and Perez remain with the team for the 2023 season.

The son of two racing parents, Max Verstappen’s rise to the pinnacle of motorsport was all but guaranteed from a young age. His father Jos drove in F1 between 1994-2003, most notably as Michael Schumacher’s teammate in his debut season. Mother Sophie was also a very good go karter in her own right. Of the entire grid, Verstappen’s rise to F1 was fast tracked more than any other – competing in various junior championships as a teen before a season in European Formula 3. Mercedes were in the mix for Verstappen’s services as a reserve driver before Red Bull pounced in 2014, offering Verstappen a race seat at Toro Rosso in 2015. Partnered with the son of another famous racer Carlos Sainz Jnr, Verstappen shone from the very beginning, scoring points in his second race and becoming the youngest ever driver to achieve the feat at age 17. An early season driver change at Red Bull saw Verstappen promoted to the senior team in time for the Spanish Grand Prix of 2016 – in which he won in his first race with the team, becoming the youngest ever winner of a Formula One race. Six further podiums were to follow for 2016 including an eye-catching run to 3rd in the Brazilian Grand Prix – a drive compared to other great wet weather drives from the likes of Senna and Schumacher. Nine further wins were added to Verstappen’s tally from 2017-20, finishing “best of the rest” behind the dominant Mercedes team in 2019 and 2020. Paired with the experienced Sergio Perez for 2021, Verstappen had a season-long battle with Lewis Hamilton, the pair clashing on track multiple times throughout the year. Ultimately Verstappen’s first F1 championship came in dramatic fashion – passing Hamilton for the lead on the final lap of the season finale in Abu Dhabi. 2022 was far more straight forward for Verstappen, breaking all sorts of records throughout the year on his way to a 15-victory championship season. With team stability at its highest, Verstappen and Perez continue with the team into the 2023 season.

Starting out as a winner in karts from the age of 6, Sergio Perez worked his way up through the motorsport ladder through his younger years. Mexican telephone company Telmex began sponsoring Perez from age 14, a partnership that has continued with Perez throughout his F1 career. Making the move to Europe to further his career in 2005, Perez competed in Formula BMW for two seasons as well as competing for Team Mexico in the now-defunct A1GP Series. After two seasons in Formula 3, Perez graduated to the GP2 (now F2) Series, finishing second in the championship in 2010. This ensured Perez was promoted to Formula One with the Sauber team for the 2011 season, as well as joining the Ferrari Driver Academy. Perez finished his debut race in an impressive 7th place at the Australian Grand Prix however post-race scrutineering resulted in the Sauber team’s disqualification from the race on technical grounds. Despite this, Perez would go onto finish in the points five times during the season, a peak of 7th in Silverstone. Retained alongside Kamui Kobayashi for 2012, the Sauber car was far more competitive than its predecessor, shown by Perez’s incredible drive to 2nd in the Malaysian Grand Prix of 2012 – chasing Fernando Alonso right to the end. Taking two more podiums and 10th place in the driver’s standings meant that Perez was promoted to a front-running team in McLaren for 2013. Unfortunately for Perez, the season did not go to planned, both he and teammate Jenson Button struggling with uncompetitive machinery – so much so, that Perez would go onto score 17 fewer points at McLaren than he did the previous season for Sauber. Perez moved from McLaren to Force India from 2014, a team he stayed with for seven seasons. It was during this time that Perez re-established himself as a solid and fast driver capable of picking up podiums when the car and race events aligned. Perez finished on the podium seven times in his time with the Force India/Racing Point outfit, the peak coming in his final season with the team, winning the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix – made even more impressive by the fact that Perez was in last place in the early stages of the race. Red Bull, looking for experience to partner Max Verstappen, signed Perez for the 2021 season which saw a much more rounded version of Perez take his opportunity at a genuine front running team. Perez won his 5th race with the team at Baku, taking four further podiums on his way to a personal best 4th in the championship. Perez went one better in 2022, taking two wins and 11 podiums – helping the team to the Constructor’s Championship and finishing 3rd in the Driver’s Championship himself. Perez remains with Red Bull for a third season alongside Verstappen for 2023.
